Onsite Wastewater Systems* for Residences in BC *formerly known as septic systems
ASTTBC has produced a brochure about the Sewerage System Regulation (SSR) that was enacted in 2005, and how it applies to all smaller systems, including those for houses, small businesses and even small communal systems. Some key highlights include:
- Changes in homeowner responsibility
- Who is authorized to perform specific areas of work
- Defining an Authorized Person
- Where to find an Authorized Person
To download a copy of the brochure, click Onsite Wastewater Systems Brochure or to receive a complimentary copy, contact the Applied Science Technologists & Technicians of BC (ASTTBC) directly at 604-585-2788 or email a request to techinfo@asttbc.org
List of "Professionals" for the Purpose of Sewerage System Regulation
On May 31, 2005, the new “Sewerage System Regulation” (Regulation) came into force for site assessment, planning, design, installation and maintenance of onsite sewerage disposal systems, under the “Health Act”. “Professionals,” as defined in this new Regulation may undertake Type I, Type 2, and Type 3 systems, as defined in the Regulation. A “Registered practitioner (ROWP),” as defined under the Regulation may only undertake independent services for Type 1 and Type 2 systems. ROWP members of ASTTBC can be involved in the installation /maintenance of Type 3 systems provided that the involvement is under the direct supervision and responsibility /signoff of a “professional”. Together, “professionals” and “registered practitioners” are referred to as “authorized persons” under the Regulation.
To facilitate identifying professional engineer members of the Association Of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (APEGBC) who are qualified to, and do, practice in this area of engineering, the Health Authorities receiving the filings and also the public; who require the services of these professional engineers, APEGBC has requested and prepared a list of professional engineers undertaking services as “professionals” under the Regulation, complete with contact information. This list may not include all professional engineers undertaking these services, which has been compiled on the basis of requests from individual professional engineers to be included on the list, on the basis of their self declaration that they are qualified by training or experience in accordance with Principle 2 of the APEGBC Code of Ethics.
A listing of Professional Engineers (P.Eng.) as ‘professionals’ for the purpose of the Sewerage System Regulation,
registered with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (APEGBC), can be found online at http://www.apeg.bc.ca/members/sewerageprolist.html

| Willis - ASTTBC's New ROWP Insurance Services Provider |
B008.06 |
| To All ROWP Registrants: |
We are pleased to advise that effective March 22, 2006 ASTTBC has appointed Willis Canada Inc. as ASTTBC's new broker and strategic partner for all membership insurance needs.
| To summarize their history, Willis began operations in 1828 and has become one of the leading insurance brokers and risk management consultant firms in the world. They employ 16,000 Associates in a network of over 300 offices serving over 50,000 clients. In Canada they have over 350 insurance professionals in six offices across the country. A major focus of Willis in Canada is the management of Association Programs, and in particular, Professional Liability (E&O) Programs. More information on Willis can be found on their global web site at... www.willis.com |
| Willis can currently handle ROWP's E&O insurance requirements, for those who work exclusively in the Planner or Private Inspector categories, under the current ASTTBC ENCON Group Plan. For those members who are involved in the combined practices of Planning and Installation and/or Maintenance, Willis can also provide, on an individual basis, CGL insurance to address their current coverage needs. Willis is actively marketing the ROWP coverage requirements to insurance carriers around the world so that a competitive group CGL package can be offered to all our ROWP registrants. It is hoped to have this in place before the end of the year. Those members that have existing ENCON coverage from ASTTBC's previous broker need not worry as your insurance renewal will be seamless and transparent, with the only change being that the information for renewal will come from Willis. |
| For those registrants considering purchasing insurance for the first time, please do not hesitate to contact Willis if you would like to discuss the coverages available. Your primary contact at Willis will be Katie Thomas. Katie has a long history of working as a service provider on E&O programs and has experience dealing with large program groups. She also has experience as an insurance underwriter of professional liability risks. Please don't hesitate to contact Katie should you have any questions on coverage terms and conditions, in addition to administrative requests related to new or renewing applications. |
| Katie can be reached by contacting the Willis main line at (604) 683-6831 or toll free at 1-800-665-5252. |
| ASTTBC is very excited about the opportunity to work with Willis in co-managing the ROWP registrant's liability risk management practices. |
